Javier Jaramillo García

JavierJaramilloJavier was born in Madrid, Spain in 1990. He received his BSc in Chemistry in 2012 from the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain), achieving a extraordinary graduation award. During his BSc studies, he worked during the 2011 summer in the Medical Chemistry Institute (National Research Council), under the supervision of Dr. Francisco Sánchez, in the synthesis of new drugs for neurodegenerative issues, thanks to a JAE-INTRO grant. Also, he worked during his last BSc year (2011-2012) under the supervision of Dr. Gema de la Torre and Prof. Tomás Torres in the synthesis of new phthalocyanines for DSSC’s, funded by a Spanish Government scholarship. In the 2012 summer, he moved to the University of Southampton (UK) thanks to a Erasmus Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP) grant working 3 months under the supervision of Prof. Philip Gale, studing simple molecules that can act as anion receptors. He continued his studies with a  MSc in Organic Chemistry, developing his MSc Thesis in the group of Prof. Torres. Then, in November 2013 he moved to the University of Manchester (UK) to begin his PhD under the supervision of Prof. David Leigh, funded by the SASSYPOL-INT european project.

Our goal in this european project is to create Extremely Strong and Switchable H-bonded Polymers. We plan to use extremely strong heterocycle-based binding arrays to create a switchable supramolecular polymer. The Leigh group has been developing the synthetic methodologies required to access contiguous hydrogen bond acceptor systems (A) and their complementary donor systems (D). This project will involve the synthesis and characterisation of these heterocycle-based AAA-DDD, AAAADDDD and AAAAA-DDDDD hydrogen bond systems, the evaluation of their complementary high association and their incorporation into polymeric chains.
